For this month's Bletcher Hour we are celebrating the youth artwork of our current online exhibition VIRTUALLY INSTALLED: LETHBRIDGE SCHOOLS. STUDENTS. ART., featuring artists from the Lethbridge school division in kindergarten to grade 12. View the incredible artworks!
We will meet online for our reading group on Thursday, May 13, from 6 - 7 pm MST to discuss Joan Miró's Rhymes of Childhood, an excerpt from The Innocent Eye: Children's Art and the Modern Artist by Jonathan Fineberg.
Here are some questions your can pose to yourself while reading:
By the age of 8, Miró was already drawing in a realistic style, losing the child-like play often present in his peers. He spent much of his professional career as an artist trying to recapture the "imaginative exuberance" of a child's perspective, described by one friend as "walking the street wide-eyed like an 'amazed child.'"
Do you have any of your childhood drawings? Can you remember how you perceived the world when you were a child?
Do you spend time drawing or art-making with children? How can we take their excitement, playfulness, and creativity and incorporate it into our own lives? How can we be more curious in our explorations?
The SAAG’s Critical Reading Group, named after our first librarian Hazel Bletcher, gathers online for open discussion on Thursday evenings. Readings explore key themes of the exhibitions and connect with current events, with the intent to deepen our understanding of the artworks and their context within our community.
A limited run of the Bletcher Hour Reader is published for each exhibition block, that is printed and bound in our Publication Studio, and launched at the opening. Readings are announced in advance and can be emailed by contacting Courtney Faulkner, Public Engagement & Event Coordinator | cfaulkner@saag.ca.
