SAAG Writing Prize

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery is pleased to announce the return of the eighth annual SAAG Writing Prize, with a fresh new format. This year’s competition will again feature the 500-word exhibition review category and two new categories: poetry and prose. Poets are invited to submit work up to 60 lines and writers may submit a short story or creative nonfiction for the prose category, up to 2000 words. 

 

Adjudication for the SAAG Writing Prize will be led by author, writer and critic David Balzer. Balzer is an accomplished writer and his book Curationism: How Curating Took Over the Art World and Everything Else won the ICA’s London Book of the Year. Our panel of judges will also include, Kristy Trinier, SAAG’s Executive Director and Portia Priegert, editor of Galleries West at www.gallerieswest.ca

 

All winning entries will be compiled into a book which will be produced by SAAG Publication Studio and released during Alberta Culture Days. The winning authors will each receive 10 copies of the book and will be recognized at a writing workshop hosted by David Balzer (September 29, 4 PM). An additional 30 copies will be produced and available for purchase at The Shop at SAAG. Finally, Galleries West will also publish the winning work in the exhibition review category.

 

Rules

    

At the time of entry, writers must be at least 18 years of age, residents of Alberta, and have fewer than five pieces of writing published in a nationally distributed magazine. All submissions must be original and previously unpublished works. Participants retain all copyrights to their works, however, consent to publish if their works is selected. Additionally, participants can only submit one work per category, but may submit a work to each of the categories. Students and emerging writers are encouraged to participate. All applicants are encouraged to include a current CV and short biography. Electronic submissions are preferred and please use the subject line, SAAG Writing Prize, including the competition category (exhibition review/poetry/prose).

Please email submissions to: James Phelan, Public Engagement Coordinator and Event Coordinator at jphelan@saag.ca with the subject line SAAG Writing Prize and including the category (review/poetry/prose). Deadline to submit is July 1, 2019.
