December 3, 1994 - January 15, 1995

Curator: Joan Stebbins

Lisa Couwenbergh is a young painter from Amsterdam upon whose large canvases float robust, organic forms which, despite the many associations they call to mind, refuse to be precisely identified. These forms are defined through forceful brush strokes and a marked play of light and shadow which distinguishes them from the flatter ground. There is a remarkable balance between Couwenbergh’s painterly technique and the near sculptural quality of her work. While her colour use recalls Jan Van Eyck and other Flemish masters, these paintings have a modeled character like that of the sculpted hedgerows and geometric ponds of a baroque garden. It is perhaps this landscape cartoon elements which, despite their ambiguity, lends these paintings a simultaneously elusive and familiar aspect.
