William MacDonnell   Dort? Ja, ebendort

March 12, 1994 - April 24, 1994

Organized by the Southern Alberta Art Gallery with funding assistance from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

In his own words, William MacDonnell’s recent work involved an “examination of cultural society wishes to remember but also especially for those events and places which every society wishes to remember but also especially for those which a society wishes to forget.” In order to accomplish this he often collapses both history and art history, combining painterly abstraction with hard-edged formal idealism, framing a naturalistic landscape with thick bands of colour, while connecting separate historical events or sites through the juxtaposition of historical “quotes,” both pictorial and textual. The melancholy, contemplative nature of these paintings, with their sad colour and rain of paint, speaks to both the representation of history and the history of painting, opening both up to re-evaluation.
