Elisabeth Hopkins   The Magical World of Elisabeth Hopkins

October 2, 1982 - October 30, 1982

Elisabeth Hopkins lives in Galliano Island in British Columbia. Although she has drawn and painted all her life, her work first came to public attention in 1975 when she was 88 years old. Since then she has exhibited regularly in Vancouver and developed an enthusiastic audience for her watercolours. Hopkins’ work combines the natural with the fantastic to create an imaginary universe where animals partake in activities normally associated with human beings. In her world, cats have birthday parties, go fishing and celebrate Christmas. Lions stroll through exotic gardens on their way to meetings with mythical friends. Her creates are often found among the foliage of magic forests where they live in harmony with nature. Her work projects an innocence and naïveté combined with a sly sense of humour behind which one detects a strongly moral point of view. The force of Hopkins’ vision lifts the work beyond the merely illustrative or charming to provide a thoughtful commentary on the world as it should be.
